A New Star for North Carolina’s ‘Discovery Economy’

The Center for Design Innovation (CDI) and its new Innovation Quarter center and lab represent a major opportunity to grow the state’s ‘discovery economy’ – utilizing the art and science of creativity and design to inspire entrepreneurial enterprise and a 21st Century workforce.

Locally, CDI fits into an emerging landscape of business and technology incubators and accelerators in North Carolina working to facilitate new business startups and investment. In that role, it can provide much needed expertise and support to other Triad region and statewide organizations.

On a national level, CDI must fit into a network of strategic centers aligned with research universities and industry that spur U.S. technology clusters – California’s Silicon Valley, Massachusetts’s Route 128, North Carolina’s Research Triangle, San Francisco’s Tech Enterprises, Chicago’s Start-up Culture, Seattle, Los Angeles, Austin, and Boulder to name a few. The point is that the discovery of new ideas, products, and technologies depends on feeding and extending these networks – especially so if North Carolina’s pockets of success can expand to other areas of the state.

CDI was envisioned nearly a decade ago with these local, state, and national ambitions in mind. During that time, the CDI has worked with its UNC and FTCC partners to realize this vision that has been backed by the North Carolina state legislature. Now, with its signature center and lab built in the heart of Winston-Salem’s new Innovation Quarter, focused attention must be given to investing in its success.
